The Poetry Pantry
2nd Chance Poems or 1st time shares

Hi Poets - Happy  Sunday to You all.  Did I shake you up with the new picture?  I hope so.  Somehow I think people probably have become so familiar with the old picture that they don't even read the words below.  I hope to change that.  I don't want the Pantry to be robotic. Hope you all have found poetic inspiration since we met here last Sunday. And I hope your life has brought you good things.  How did it get to be December already? It is always nice to look forward to spending time with you sharing poetry on Sunday.  I look forward to seeing what many of you have written this week.

I have noticed that the people who are most reciprocal in visiting others are those who post the first day, Sunday.  Late linkers don't tend to do many visits, I've found.  I have decided to close the Pantry at 12 noon Central Time on Monday.  I think that should give people enough time to link their poem.

I will just lay it out from my personal perspective here.  If you are a person who generally 'links and runs' here, hoping that posting your link will get your blog more hits, and if you don't visit others in return, I will be passing you by this week.  Some people do this every week, and  it gets old.  I like to reciprocate, but reciprocity is a TWO - WAY street.  I guess it is the holiday season, I realize the value of my time too.

Even if you wrote your poem for another site originally, consider also including a link back to Poetry Pantry to spread the word and the joy of poetry and help others to discover our site. I have been heartened by the number of people who really have gotten into the habit of visiting a large number of fellow poets.  Please try to visit as many other poets as you can.

If you see someone's name you don't recognize, stop in and say "Welcome."  And if you are a person new to this site, the best way to be known is to visit others' sites.  If you are someone who links on the second day, the best thing for you to do is visit others' sites as well; and hopefully they will then return your visit. And don't forget to leave a comment here at this site after you link.  Even if just to say hi to your poet friends.

And now...here is the procedure:  Each Sunday we start a new post with a New Mr. Linky for you. This is so that you can post a link to a poem in your blog. The link will close Monday at 12:00 p.m. (CDT), but you can still visit the links of those who have posted them.

There 3 simple rules:

1. Link only 1 poem per week.  If you link more than one, anything after #1 will be removed.

2. Please visit several other poems linked here when you link to yours. Please
don't just link and run, waiting for others to visit you.
3. Leave a comment after you have posted
your link.  I find that people who leave comments tend to be more participatory.  They wish to be part of the community.  A little of this goes a long way.  It feels good for all.

  1. Summer is here in New Zealand, 26 degrees C today, out in the garden. Hi everyone!

  2. It's raining in Southern California... don't know the degrees, but not too cold... I like the sound of the steady downfall upon the roof and the feeling of being warm and safely ensconced within these walls. Happy Sunday! Can't wait to see everyone's work.

  3. Summer is here in South Africa, with temps breaking the 30C mark.. It's a topsy-turvy planet. Wherever you are I hope you are having a happy day.

  4. But what if I am too polite to comment, Mary, but have a mission?

  5. I like the change-up Mary. I always read the words but the new pic got my attention. Anyway, since Simon and Serena gave their weather reports--I'm jealous!--I'll say the weather here has been bipolar...sunny one hour, dark clouds and rain the next. Happy December everyone!

    1. Thanks for telling me you read the words. I had thought probably a lot of people didn't. If I use a different picture, I think perhaps more will read what I have to say. I will try to say something different every Sunday. Smiles.

  7. Love the photo Mary... we had a beautiful snow yesterday, December 1st will be writing about that soon, perhaps will be a link for next week. Today I offer a poem about the end of Autumn before the snow. I don't always have time to visit every poet that posts here, but enjoy the visits I am able to make. Thanks for making it possible for us to meet old friends and make new friends here.

  9. Thanks Mary. I agree on the hit and run...bot fair when you go to the trouble of commenting on someone's work and they ignore yours.
    Have a good Sunday all.

    1. Yes, 'hit and run' is generlly an annoyance of mine. We all have limited time, I think, but if someone comments on my work, I always go to their site and comment back. I know you do too. Common courtesy.

  12. I posted a poem I wrote last month, but it's one I reread and look at because of my son's picture. It was written in an accidental partnership with him.

  18. I make a point to visit and comment on at least 5 sites and usually more.

I especially try to comment on sites that have few comments. I tend to enjoy but skip commenting on "star" sites as I imagine some quiet, unknown poet could use the kudos more.

And I'd like to thank all of you for your generous and kind comments on my site. What a fun first week this has been.

    2. You're right, Mary. I been a member of other communities (flikr groups, for example) in which members post and never leave a comment--ever. It's dispiriting to say the least and I've left many groups because there is no community spirit at all.

The more time I spend in this community the more I'll recognize the the users and move on. For now I am just going by the poetry I read.

And thank for weeding them out for us. That saves a lot of time for those of us who do participate and give feedback.

    3. I play a board game (WeiQi) with a huge on-line community -- fantastic community of nerds. The administrators have all sorts of rules that keep it safe for kids and fair, fun play. I assist the admins often. When someone blatantly breaks rules, their account is banned, but usually this is proceeded with e-mail suggestions, then warnings. Since admins here know poster's e-mails, I think that some frank, straightforward advice and then warnings may help. Sure, you will lose people perhaps, but usually you will lose exactly those folks you need to lose.

Actually, as I write this, I think of how we sometimes have to "fire" patients from our medical practice. First we warn them about inappropriate behavior in our clinic, then we officially fire them -- It keeps the clinic a pleasant place for all our other patience. It is hard enough being sick, yet alone walking into a clinic with nasty, screaming people.

  19. Cool change-up, Mary - thanks for keeping the Pantry Live!!!!!! Yesterday the heavens opened and we had a wet gray sky on our heads. Today the sky is still gray but has retreated and there is some brightness up there for which I am SO grateful, I will celebrate with a dog walk:) Am looking forward to poring through the Pantry.

  22. Hey, quick question. Is this site very similar to d'Verse Poets. It looks like many of the same posters. If there is a difference, how would you try to differentiate the two sites?

    Thank you.

    1. Some of us post at both sites, Sabio. Some at one one or the other. There are a lot of different sites in the poetry blogosphere. And there is a lot of crossover. I myself am involved with / post at several different sites. We have an Open Link on Sunday; and we have a prompt on Wednesday. Other features other days of the week. d'Verse has a different routine....so does Imaginary Garden With Real Toads and Poetry Jam and Magpie Tales, etc. But we all like each other. LOL. There is room for all! Always glad to see you here...or anywhere.

    2. Hey Mary,
Yeah, I am aware of those things and the principles, of course.
So I figured it would be cool if each prompt site had different methods. For instance, Magpie Tales does a picture prompt.

I guess the difference between this site and the others is mainly schedules.
The more the better, I guess. But I'd love much larger differences in prompt types or forms or something. Sort of thinking out loud.

I think it is great to have a lot of sites but I see a lot of poems posts and linking to multiple sites.

      Delete
    3. Sabio, you know what? You could start your own prompt site???? Make it unique in types or forms or whatever. You start it, and people would come!

      Delete
    4. Mary, you know what, I thought of it. But will wait a couple years. Meanwhile I though I would encourage people with ears to hear to diversify to improve symbiotic synergism. Just thoughts.

      Delete
    5. Remember, Sabio, that sites come and go. If you develop a site with a unique slant and/or if you develop a following, people would come. I do think you'd be good. I am glad you have thought of it and will wait and see.

  27. I'm late but I'm here. off to enjoy your poems

    ReplyDelete
  28. We are never late,
as long as Mr. Linky is still awake!

So I left a poem that I have been re-writing over one month now. Ever done that? I am sure. Probably many of you, like me, never feel a poem is finished, perfect or ready. Indeed, they never are. That dissatisfaction is also part of that hungry drive to write, perhaps.

Well, it is good to have a great community to share our incomplete minds with, eh?

    ReplyDelete
  29. For example, did this linker just link us to a video?
    http://www.beingpoetry.net/
An email to folks like this would help.
Also, people need to acknowledge the prompt source. (actually I am going back to add yours to mine, I forgot)

    1. The link is deleted. Not a poem as far as I could see...and not any comment here either. And as far as I can see, no reciprocity.

  30. I am late linking up because I am having issues with Mr. Linky at home...I can't see the links sadly. This is my post over the weekend, which some of you might have read. Just wanted to link up with other poets here ~ Happy week everyone ~

  32. Mary,

I like the new fresh banner heading for The Pantry.
I wanted to explain my absesnce, since I have been unable to participate in the past weeks, as I care for my grandson on Sundays. I just have not got enough time, to be fair about posting a poem and then making visits to the Blogs of other good-spirited poets, who might visit my Blog. I must be honest about my lack of time, which sadly will keep me occupied on Sundays and therefore, not link a poem if I cannot ahere to the rules.
I try to participate at Ella's Wednesday Challenge, as it keeps my writing alive!!!
Thank you Mary, for all you are doing and be assured that if I can find time, I hope to return.
    Best Wishes,
    Eileen:)

    1. Eileen, you can post a poem sometime at your leisure and then visit other people's poems on Monday if you wish to...the links will all remain, even after Pantry Closes. But in any case, knowing where you are, it wouldn't close until evening your time anyway. But we will see you when we see you. Be well.
