Verse First ~ Women!

Welcome to Verse First, where simple notions prompt amazing poems.

Today's notion?

WOMEN

Yep. Women.

March is Women's History Month in Australia, The United Kingdom and The United States. Since 1909, March 8 has been recognized as International Women's Day, originally called International Working Women's Day.

The UN theme for International Women's Day 2013 is "A promise is a promise: Time for action to end violence against women;” while the official International Women's Day 2013 committee has declared the year's theme as The Gender Agenda: Gaining Momentum.

So, please, click on some of the above links if you need further inspiration and write a poem about women. Post your work on your website, then use Mr. Linky to share it with us. Feel free to leave a comment below, and be sure to support your fellow poets by visiting and commenting.

Looking forward to reading some amazing poems! ~ Kim

  2. This is probably my first time to share something for Poets United. I just can't resist to write something about the prompt today. I went something dark and hopefully i conveyed well the (i think) story of most women's life behind their art of keeping secrets --- the real woman as lay bare from the cosmetics they used to make their battered skin looked perfect to the world. Thank you Kim for the prompt! smiles...

  3. Thanks Kim - the tired monk needed some prompting. God Bless all Women! We really need to love and respect women in a true and deep sense.

  4. I wrote this poem on my daughter's wedding day. As I was lacing up her dress, I saw for an instant the little girl who was overwhelmed and remembered the joy of raising her as well as the pride of her becoming a beautiful, strong woman and the sadness of letting her go.

    1. I will head over to your poem shortly, Lisa. Interestingly, my youngest daughter will be married in a few weeks. This theme is exceedingly relevant to me right now.

  5. I decided to delete the poem, Reflections, instead I have posted an essay which pertains more to women's issues.

  6. Mine is more of a social observation. What could this, or any other "international" day achieve if actual governments, religions institutions, or actual leaders grew backbones and openly stated what needs to happen? We are far too concerned with feelings, I fear, to actually engage in change, no matter what the cause may be.....

  10. Kim,

Back from San Diego....preparing to return to writing!!!

Your topic gave me a chance to examine some personal memories and to think of 'having a voice.' Recalling childhood times.

  11. I've linked up something which might be too left field, hoping that we move beyond feminism to a place of pure undiluted equality for everyone.

  12. Interesting prompt, Kim! I have responded to it, asked a question of those who read that I hope they will answer, and have commented on everyone's poems who have shared them thus far. Hopefully, others will do the same.

  13. Hi, i have had a go, on the theme of equality and how we see each other and value each other. It may work, but it was certainly a challenging prompt. Thanks

  18. A challenging prompt for me — and what I have posted needs a lot more work. But it's an idea, and the start of a poem.
