Which, in retrospect, was a perplexing conclusion, on my part. Men can hurt, and feel loss, too. The close on this:

'Though this be the last pain that she makes me suffer
and these the last verses that I write for her.'

leave his readers to wonder if, indeed, he was able to keep both of those vows ... haunting to contemplate.

Another awesome post, Rosemary.
Wendy Bourkehttps://www.blogger.com/profile/09475940407969993348noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-4139625267522039683.post-2680495806758065752017-07-02T01:53:18.356-04:002017-07-02T01:53:18.356-04:00What an informative post - thanks RosemaryWhat an informative post - thanks RosemaryJae Rosehttps://www.blogger.com/profile/11509244123008832611noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-4139625267522039683.post-56503597245067437642017-07-02T00:50:15.455-04:002017-07-02T00:50:15.455-04:00Absolutely beautiful, this love poem, I adore t...Absolutely beautiful, this love poem, I adore the expression of helplessness in these lines
"What does it matter that my love could not keep her.
The night is starry and she is not with me."

Thanks for sharing this one with us Rosemary

Much love... I try to read him in Spanish sometimes and grasp the full beauty of his poems. But most often I read translations. I agree that his writing is superb in any language. This poem will stay with me. And I will keep my eyes open for the movie. Though I have heard of Neruda, I don't think I have read much / any of his work. I notice this one was translated by W.S. Merwin who is another of my favorite poets.
