Verse First ~ Writers are Lovers

Verse First ~ Writers are Lovers

Welcome to VERSE FIRST, where simple notions prompt amazing poems.
Today's notion?

WRITERS ARE LOVERS

In "Allen verbatim : lectures on poetry, politics, consciousness", Allen Ginsberg shares an interesting viewpoint: "Writers are great lovers... and great lovers realize that they are what they love."

Ginsberg further revealed that he loved Jack Kerouac and his work, and that he wanted to write in a way that would please his idol.  "... being in love with Jack Kerouac, I discovered that I was Jack Kerouac: that's something love knows."

Ginsberg's perspective encourages us to ponder the writers we love and the writing we produce because of that love. Your assignment this week? Choose one poet you adore and write a piece to honor or express that adoration.

After posting your poem on your site, link here. Please post only original work that speaks to the prompt; and then honor the Poets United spirit of community by visiting and commenting on others' contributions.

  2. Oh dear, this is tough. Only one poet comes to mind. Hugo.

But then I remember I adore the poems by Sherry, Carrie Van Horn, Tess Kincaid, S M Kelvin, Arian Tejano, Grace, Gretchen Leary…

  3. When I read this prompt, the writer I admire the most immediately leapt to the front of mind, and I knew I had been waiting twenty five years to write a tribute to her. Thank you for the inspiration!

  4. born without voice
    & never hearing one himself

    barrel chested & rough
    in face---he led us

up the cliffs, keeping us safe
    until we jumped off

& at night around the fire
he wrote poetry in the air
    with an embered stick

    the hare, the thrush
    the babbling brook---he knew them
    only by sight

    & so showed me much

ollie's got me thinking of my guide and belay when i went mountain climbing the first time as a teen...he was a deaf mute, with a fierce love of nature & people---spending a couple weeks in the mountains with him, i def learned much of life

    1. Wow, Brian, this is fantastic. Those who cannot speak have extra eyes with which to see. What a wonderful two weeks that must have been. I love "the hare, the thrush, the babbling brook". Beautiful.

  8. Thanks, Kim, lovely prompt. Oh, there are so many poets I'm in love with! But not so many I try to emulate.

  9. I wrote about Gregory Orr, a poet probably only a few here know. He has often inspired me when I have searched for words.

  11. Kim,

Loved this prompt, but needed time to collect adequate words about my man, Mr Samuel Beckett:) I can highly recommend his novels and poems.

  14. Great prompt
I agree that writers are lovers.
I feel poetry. whether inspiration comes from others in the community, music that is carried through the trees, the sounds and sights of nature, or from the soft undertones of my God I am blessed in my small way to express what that feels like...
