“We are each other's harvest; we are each
other's business;
we are each other's magnitude and bond.”
“Pit race against race, religion against
religion,
prejudice against prejudice. Divide and
conquer!
We must not let that happen here.”
“I felt knowledge and the unity of the
world
circulate in me like my own blood.”

Midweek Motif ~ Unity
Is
there anything that doesn't work better with Unity?
As
a principle of design, unity:
"occurs when all of
the elements of a piece combine to make a balanced,
the elements of a piece combine to make a balanced,
harmonious,
complete whole. Unity is another of those
hard-to-describe
art terms but, when it's present,
your
eye and brain are pleased to see it."

Your
Challenge: In a new poem, bring
diverse or disparate entities into
unity.
Excerpt from The
Anti-Suffragists
Fashionable women in luxurious homes,
With men to feed them, clothe them, pay
their bills,
Bow, doff the hat, and fetch the
handkerchief;
Hostess or guest, and always so supplied
With graceful deference and courtesy;
Surrounded by their servants, horses, dogs,
—
These tell us they have all the rights they
want.
Successful women who have won their way
Alone, with strength of their unaided arm,
Or helped by friends, or softly climbing up
By the sweet aid of ‘woman’s influence’;
Successful any way, and caring naught
For any other woman’s unsuccess, —
These tell us they have all the rights they
want.
BY HAFITZ
I
haveLearned
haveLearned
So much from God
That I can no longer
Call
Myself
That I can no longer
Call
Myself
A Christian, a Hindu, a Muslim,
A Buddhist, a Jew.
A Buddhist, a Jew.
The Truth has shared so much of Itself
With me
With me
That I can no longer call myself
A man, a woman, an angel,
Or even pure
Soul.
A man, a woman, an angel,
Or even pure
Soul.
Love has
Befriended Hafiz so completely
It has turned to ash
And freed
Me
Befriended Hafiz so completely
It has turned to ash
And freed
Me
Of every concept and image
My mind has ever known.
My mind has ever known.
so much depends
upon
a red wheel
barrow
glazed with rain
water
beside the white
chickens.

Sumana’s Midweek Motif will be ~ Change)
a lovely one Susan, enjoyed much :)
ReplyDeleteThank you for another midweek jolt - as ever we come a little off centre but good to join in!
ReplyDeleteGood morning, sweet Sumana and Jae and all of the Poets United! Thank you for your words. I attempted a sestina this week, which is undone (both the week and the poem), and so am trying something simpler to post later today. Meanwhile, you brighten a grey cold rainy morning here near Philadelphia, PA, USA.
ReplyDelete(Funny how I didn't think of Poets or States when "unity" insisted on being a motif!)
'Unity' seems an appropriate theme for Poets United! :-)
ReplyDeleteHave a good week, everybody!
Hello everyone,
ReplyDeleteHope you guys are having an amazing day so far ❤️ sharing my poem "Capriccio" thank you Susan as ever for inspiring us all.
Lots of love,
Sanaa
Yes, a timely prompt. We need unity as never before. And, in response, the people are on the move. Thanks, Susan, for hosting. We are having downpours here, West Coast winter weather, better than the cold and snow.
ReplyDeleteThank you, Susan for beautiful prompt. It took me on a journey, and the release was simple 'rumination'...:)
ReplyDeleteLuv that poem The Red Wheelbarrow
ReplyDeleteHappy Midweek to all
much love...
It seemed so quiet yesterday! But I enjoyed the signs and definitions and gathering of Unity here. I think I'll check into Unity more often.
ReplyDeleteI'm here way too late to post but wanted to say hello and check in. I read a few of the recent posts they were wonderful! I'm working on next Wednesday's poem so I can Link on time and participate.
ReplyDeleteHave a nice weekend!! Hugs!
