Poets United Midweek Motif ~ Love

“There is only one happiness in this life, to love and be loved”— George Sand

Le Printemps by Pierre Auguste Cot (1873)

“I have decided to stick with love. Hate is too great a burden to bear.”— Martin Luther King, Jr.

         Midweek Motif ~ Love

This week’s motif is Love.

I ask you to honor and celebrate Love in your lines today.

I am sharing some simple, passionate and timeless lines from some of my favorite poets from Persia, Lebanon and Syria:

Rumi:

The Privileged Lovers

The moon has become a dancer
at this festival of love.
This dance of light,

This sacred blessing,
This divine love,
beckons us
to a world beyond
only lovers can see
with their eyes of fiery passion.

They are the chosen ones
who have surrendered.
Once they were particles of light
now they are the radiant sun.

They have left behind
the world of deceitful games.
They are the privileged lovers
who create a new world
with their eyes of fiery passion.

Translated by: Fereydoun Kia

Khalil Gibran:

Which Is More Important?

One day you will ask me
which is more important?
My life or yours?
I will say mine
and you will walk away
not knowing
that you are my life.

Most Love Is Lost

Between what is said and not meant
And what is meant and not said
             Most of love is lost.

Nizar Qabbani:

Because My Love For You

Because my love for you
Is higher than words
I have decided to fall silent

In Spite Of The Tribe

she married me , in spite of the tribe
and she traveled with me , in spite of the tribe
and she gave me zaynab and omar , in spite of the tribe

and when I used to ask her _ why ?
she would take me , like a child, against her chest :
and say " because you are my tribe"

My Lover Asks Me

                          My lover asks me:
"What is the difference between me and the sky?"
                       The difference, my love,
                        Is that when you laugh,
                           I forget about the sky.

When I Love

When I love
I feel that I am the king of time
I possess the earth and everything on it
and ride into the sun upon my horse.

When I love
I become liquid light
invisible to the eye
and the poems in my notebooks
become fields of mimosa and poppy.

When I love
the water gushes from my fingers
grass grows on my tongue
when I love
I become time outside all time.

When I love a woman
all the trees
run barefoot toward me...

Poets United Midweek Motif ~ Commitment

source

"Commitment is an act, not a word."---Jean- Paul Sartre

""In journalism just one fact that is false prejudices the entire work. In contrast, in fiction one single fact that is true gives legitimacy to the entire work. That's the only difference, and it lies in the commitment of the writer. A novelist can do anything he wants so long as he makes people believe in it."---Gabriel Garcia Marquez

"Blind commitment to a theory is not an intellectual virtue: it is an intellectual crime."---Imre Lakatos

"We cannot be sure of having something to live for unless we are willing to die for it."---Ernesto Che Guevara

                     Midweek Motif ~ Commitment

Commitment is "the state or quality of being dedicated to a cause, activity etc.". This is the dictionary-definition of commitment.

So it stops us from being selfish, being occupied with only ourselves. Rather it takes us to a broader context of life and motivates at try out things that are worth to be committed for.

It is a process of growth ensuring a life with purpose.

Let's see what you are committed to this week.

Write your poem on Commitment to whatever you wish....Relationship, Work, God, Nature, Excellence, anything.

A few poems to inspire you:

Stopping by Woods on a Snowy Evening

by Robert Frost

Whose woods these are I think I know.
His house is in the village though;
He will not see me stopping here
To watch his woods fill up with snow.

My little horse must think it queer
To stop without a farmhouse near
Between the woods and frozen lake
The darkest evening of the year.

He gives his harness bells a shake
To ask if there is some mistake.
The only other sound's the sweep
Of easy wind and downy flake.

The woods are lovely, dark and deep,
But I have promises to keep,
And miles to go before I sleep,
And miles to go before I sleep.

Sonnet XXVVII

by Pablo Neruda

I do not love you as if you were salt-rose or topaz,
or the arrow of carnations the fire shoots off.
I love you as certain dark things are to be loved,
in secret, between thee shadow and the soul.

I love you as the plant that never blooms
but carries in itself the light of hidden flowers,
thanks to your love a certain solid fragrance,
risen from the earth, lives darkly in my body.

I love you without knowing how, or when, or from where.
I love you straightforwardly, without complexities or pride;
so I love you because I know no other way

than this: where I does not exist nor you,
so close that your hand on my chest is my hand,
so close that your eyes close as I fall asleep.

Friendship IXX

by Khalil Gibran

And a youth says, "Speak to us of Friendship."
Your friend is your needs answered.
He is your field which you sow with love and reap with thanksgiving
And he is your board and your fireside.
For you come to him with your hunger, and you seek him for peace.
When your friend speaks his mind you fear not the "nay" in your own mind, nor do you withhold the "ay".
