others both classical and new. Join them!
Write a poem for a child: An actual child, you or someone you know as a child, a symbolic child ... any child.
excerpt from MY FANCY BY: Lewis Carroll
- . . . .
- She boxed my ears this morning--
- They tingled very much;
- I own that I could wish her
- A somewhat lighter touch;
- And if you were to ask me how
- Her charms might be improved,
- I would not have them added to,
- But just a few removed!
- She has the bear's ethereal grace,
- The bland hyena's laugh,
- The footstep of the elephant,
- The neck of the giraffe.
- I love her still, believe me,
- Though my heart its passion hides;
- "She is all my fancy painted her,"
- But, oh, how much besides!
"My Fancy" is reprinted from The Hunting
of the Snark and Other Poems and Verses.
Spring and Fall BY GERARD MANLEY HOPKINS
to a young childMárgarét, áre you gríevingOver Goldengrove unleaving?Leáves like the things of man, youWith your fresh thoughts care for, can you?Ah! ás the heart grows olderIt will come to such sights colderBy and by, nor spare a sighThough worlds of wanwood leafmeal lie;And yet you wíll weep and know why.Now no matter, child, the name:Sórrow’s spríngs áre the same.Nor mouth had, no nor mind, expressedWhat heart heard of, ghost guessed:It ís the blight man was born for,It is Margaret you mourn for.
