Poets United Midweek Motif ~ Leaders/Leadership

“Our chief want is someone who will inspire us to be what we know we could be.”

“I would like to be known as a person who is concerned about freedom

and equality and justice and prosperity for all people.”

Today's Motif: Leaders/Leadership

Write an ode celebrating an historical leader or fantasy hero.  Here in the USA, I am thinking of President's Day and its emphasis on George Washington and Abraham Lincoln, but there are many other choices living and dead and fictional and not yet created. What do you see as leadership?

I am inspired by Botlahle's performance poem that won the South Africa's Got Talent competition last year:

  1. Mr Linky is fixed! I just reinstalled him. But in between my desk top monitor died, so I am now really testing out my eyesight and fingers on this 8" tablet. I'm going to make coffee and write my poem and I'll be back.

  2. Do you see it? I write a poem that I cried over, a demi-ode from my heart. I have been sorely disappointed in Possibility and now am apprehensive for the future of the USA.

    1. Hey Brian! Glad to see you here. I'm open for business through Saturday. You come on back with your Leadership/Leaders Ode when you are ready. I learned this morning how intense a prompt it is. Funny how little we talk about leadership . . . .

  6. Susan,

Sorry to read about your technology gremlins in the earlier part of your day. I hope that all is well now.
This was a powerful prompt, and I treated it with respect:)
I like the idea of an ealy hint, about the next Mid-Week Motif. Plenty of time to consider!!!

  7. I wrote another, more ode-like. Since I already posted, I'll put it in here.

    Ode to a Leader a la Dictionary.com

Not the dominant one, but one who leads as if
a guiding hand or head of a body in motion

My first leader was protection between the mainline
of my rod and the business end with its bait and hook

My second leader was control and focus in news
and, to my joy, a story I sold to a journal.

After the first two, leaders were rampant in my life:
beginnings of film and tape, downspouts, and rows of dots

Nothing was more useful than a leader, guiding one
team, unified by the horse harnessed and out in front

Nothing was more beautiful than first violins song
trumpets lead and aria, except conductor’s dance
