Poets United Midweek Motif ~ Space

“Love is space and time measured by the heart.”—Marcel Proust

“Metaphors have a way of holding the most truth in the least space.”—Orson Scott Card

“Make an empty space in any corner of your mind, and creativity will instantly fill it.”—Dee Hock

“Music was my refuge. I could crawl into the space between the notes and curl my back to loneliness.”—Maya Angelou

“The important achievement of Apollo was demonstrating that humanity is not forever chained to this planet and our visions go rather further than that and our opportunities are unlimited.”—Neil Armstrong

“What can we gain by sailing to the moon if we are not able to cross the abyss that separates us from ourselves? This is most important of all voyages discovery, and without it all the rest are not only useless, but disastrous.”—Thomas Merton

          Midweek Motif ~ Space

Space is a point and it may extend to infinity. We all have our space in between. It is often a comfort zone or a suitable environment but more often it is not.

Not sure how the other species feel when humans intrude their space. But we know how people react when their personal space is breached.

Today our motif is all about Space, whether it is Cosmos or a tiny dot.

The Sky Is Filled
by Rabindranath Tagore

The sky is filled with suns and stars; the planet is with life,
Amidst all these        my own space found have I,
In wonderment thus       my song stirs up.
In the wave of infinite time the world sways in ebb and tide,
I feel that pull in throbbing veins and pulse beat of mine,
In wonderment thus       my song stirs up.
I’ve stepped on leaves of grass while in walks on wood-trails
Startled by the flower-scent the mind’s risen in excitement,
Bounty of Bliss is outspread,
In wonderment thus        my song stirs up.
I’ve lent my ears, kept open my eyes, into Earth’s bosom poured out my life,
In the midst of the known my quest’s been for unknown,
In wonderment thus        my song stirs up.

There Is Another Sky
by Emily Dickinson

There is another sky,
Ever serene and fair,
And there is another sunshine,
Though it be darkness there;
Never mind faded forests, Austin,
Never mind silent fields-
Here is a little forest,
Whose leaf is ever green;
Here is a brighter garden,
Where not a frost has been;
In its unfading flowers
I hear the bright bee hum:
Prithee, my brother,
Into my garden come!

In Flanders Fields
 by John McCrae

In Flanders fields the poppies blow
Between the crosses, row on row,
That mark our place, and in the sky,
The larks, still bravely singing, fly
Scarce heard amid the guns below.

We are the dead; short days ago
We lived, felt dawn, saw sunset glow,
Loved and were loved, and now we lie
In Flanders fields.

Take up our quarrel with the foe!
To you from failing hands we throw
The torch; be yours to hold it high!
If ye break faith with us who die
We shall not sleep, though poppies grow
In Flanders fields.

A Noiseless Patient Spider
by Walt Whitman

A noiseless patient spider,
I mark’d where on a little promontory it stood isolated,
Mark’d how to explore the vacant vast surrounding,
It launch’d forth filament, filament, filament, out of itself,
Ever unreeling them, ever tirelessly speeding them.

And you O my soul where you stand,
Surrounded, detached, in measureless oceans of space,
Ceaselessly musing, venturing, throwing, seeking the spheres to connect them,
Till the bridge you will need be form’d, till the ductile anchor hold,
Till the gossamer thread you fling catch somewhere, O my soul.

Second, thanks for the space prompt, Sumana. I started writing a Star Trek poem, but then got side-tracked.

  9. I really had fun with this one and it took some time to finish just because I got into reading about it. It's such a great concept and I've been writing about it on and off for years! Enjoy!

Have a great week! Is it just me or are we a little light right now? No matter, I'll be around to read. Big hug my friends!
