THE OWL
My friend, Jo Kalil Hartman, took this photo in her Tucson garden. A pair of great horned owls nested and raised two owlets in a eucalyptus tree. After looking at her photos, I was inspired to read some "owl poetry". This one by John Haines captured my attention:
If the Owl Calls Again
at dusk from the island in the river, and it's not too cold, I'll wait for the moon to rise, then take wing and glide to meet him. We will not speak, but hooded against the frost soar above the alder flats, searching with tawny eyes. And then we'll sit in the shadowy spruce and pick the bones of careless mice, while the long moon drifts toward Asia and the river mutters in its icy bed. And when the morning climbs the limbs we'll part without a sound, fulfilled, floating homeward as the cold world awakens.

WHOOOOO
he asks the question,
not in condemnation,but gaining understanding
for this is the beginning of wisdom
unless of course you are the rodent
stealing through this night, he's there and gone
before you know it, vanishing once more
out of sight.
oy, not usually as obvious with my rhymes, but it is what came to me as i was pondering....isnt this up a day early?
"for this is the beginning of wisdom"....I love this owl poem, Brian. Yes, I think it is a day early. Which is handy as I badly needed some inspiration!!
DeleteBrian,
DeleteI liked that you saw it from 'the other angle.' That of the prey:)
A wise word....
Eileen:)
For a minute there, I thought the voice would be the owls, an example of his pondering. I love that it becomes warning for the rodent! And I think Owls are near sighted, so if they miss the pounce, they have to go way back up and try again.
DeleteWHOOO questions wisdom. oh so true! questions comes first seeking wisdom. and we do often stop short of doing so!
DeleteI love the viewpoint on this one, Brian.
DeleteKim,
ReplyDeleteI have brought together my poetic observations about owls...Enjoyed writing this!!
Eileen:)
Oh I love owls! Just the spark I needed to stoke the creative flame. I will be pondering all day now about this. Thanks!
ReplyDeleteA fine creature indeed. Instills awe and wonder in me, but if I were a mouse… ?
ReplyDeleteI often prefer to link up with the direct link to the challenge - for some reason the "title" of today's challenge does not allow this. I linked the blot "Poets United" instead, but it isn't ideal.
ReplyDeleteMy owl wanted a sonnet. Of course, (s)he's not mine, and maybe that's why we are so formal.
ReplyDeleteThanks for this wonderful idea that would sure to bring out all sorts of creativity from my fellow bloggers :-)..I've posted by link ..here it goes

ReplyDeleteI am still struggling to write something. Am under the weather, kids, which seems to be my refrain this winter.
ReplyDeleteI used a photo of a snowy owl, because I find them breathtaking.
