We are all about poets and the poetry community so we have compiled a list of active prompt sites to make it easier for you. All pictures and site names are hyperlinked and will take you directly to the main page of the prompt site you select. We hope this will be a useful tool for our members and visitors to use. If you know of any other active sites that post regular prompts please feel free to email us and let us know so that we may add them to this list.

Monday

Poetry Train - A train is being run from this site for creative writing without prompts. Poetry is encouraged although not necessary. Any kind of poetry is welcome. It’s pretty simple every Monday there is a new post added. If you have a poem you want read post a link of your latest poetry/prose pieces there. May it be a poem by any of your favorite poets or a book review of a poetry book. As of now there is no theme or prompt. Poetry train has an interactive set of people in their community and feedback is great.

Monday's Child - Monday’s Child is a prompt site focused on children and their world brought to us by bkmmackenzie (some of you know her as signed…bkm). Each Monday a classic illustrated children’s photo is posted as your prompt and inspiration. These photos tug at your memories of child hood and inspire the imagination to wander into places long forgot. It’s a wonderful and positive way to find writing inspiration. As with most prompt sites Mister Linky can be found at the bottom of the page awaiting your submission. You have all week to ponder a poem of your own creation and post so don’t be afraid to give it a try.
Tuesday

Carry on Tuesday - Each week Carry On Tuesday publishes either a famous quotation or the opening lines of a book, song or poem and invite you to Carry On where the words stop. You may use some of the words or all of them either at the start of your piece or within the body of your work. The prompt will normally appear on a Sunday to enable you to have your piece completed and posted by Tuesday.

Wednesday

Three Word Wednesday - Each week, the owner of this site posts three words. You write something using those words. Then go back and post a link to the contribution with Mr. Linky. There is no hard-and-fast rule that you have to post on Wednesday. Everyone is invited everyone to participate and please check back often to read and comment.

Thursday

We Write Poems - Posts a weekly Thursday poetry prompt. On the following Wednesday, you are asked to leave the poems you wrote during that week in the comments, either the poem itself or a link to the poem on your blog. They endeavor to provide a wide variety of prompts, so if you don’t connect to the prompt one week, it’s likely you’ll find the following week’s prompt more inspiring. When sharing the poems you have written, it is essential to remember why community was created. It is a group of poets who seek inspiration, challenges, and a social community of other poets. If you comment on another poet’s work, please do so thoughtfully and positively – They are not a critique group!

Poets United – The Thursday Think Tank is a weekly prompt posted every Thursday to inspire visitors from everywhere to write and share their poems. The themes vary, so if you don’t like it one week you can always expect something different the next. As is the standard throughout most of the poetry blogosphere you add your prompt inspired poem to Mr. Linky and comment throughout the week. Poets United asks that if you take the time to post your poem for others to read then please take the time to read and comment on a few of the poems that have been inspired by their prompts.

Thursday Tales - "A Picture Is Worth A Thousand Words".  Every week on Wednesday/Thursday, they offer a photograph to base a short story on, and no, you don't have to write thousand words!! The rules can be found with the prompt alos. There hope is all have fun writing on the basis of a picture.(It's harder than it seems.) Any one who participates will be added to their Tales Train Blog Roll Also. Picturize your imagination folks!
Friday

Magpie Tales - This blog is dedicated to the enjoyment of writers, for the purpose of honing their craft, sharing it with like minded bloggers, and keeping their muses alive and well. Here you are directed to write a short vignette or poem using the picture featured in each weekly post as your inspiration. Feel free to take the photo to use for your post.

Big Tent Poetry - They post prompts on Mondays, and you have all week to write your poems, based on their fabulous prompt or any other inspiration. Go back on Friday when you will find a “Come One, Come All” post where you can use the comments section to leave a link to your poem or leave the poem in its entirety. You’ll have all weekend to post your work and read each others’ work. Take your time. Enjoy all the poems that are new to the world.

Saturday

Writer’s Island - New prompts are posted every Saturday. Consider the prompt in depth, and then let inspiration carry you. When you feel what you’ve written is ready to be read by the other Islanders, just post your link right in the comments section at the bottom of the corresponding prompt or post. Please leave whatever expanded comment you wish as a part of your posted link. You can also reply directly to any other comment.

Dishwater Dreams – Writing is not always easy. Sometimes the blank page is terrifying. Every Saturday, Dishwater Dreams posts a writing prompt to help get the blank page filled. Stop by anytime during the week and leave a comment with a link to your post in response to their latest prompts. Any medium is welcome not just poetry. They accept art, short stories and whatever else you can imagine artistically. Please be sure to stop by other participants links and leave comments.

Sunday

One Single Impression – One Single Impression (OSI) is a community of poets writing and sharing haiku and other poetic forms. Each week they offer up a new prompt that they hope will inspire your writing. They are always up for suggestions invite participants to share ideas for prompts, too. It’s pretty simple to participate. Post your prompt inspired poetry on your blog. You can post any time during the week. Go to the OSI page and enter your link into Mr. Linky. Other participants can easily find you by clicking your name in Mr. Linky. Enjoy the beautiful poems of the other bloggers. There is a new Mr. Linky each week so you always have to sign up on the current one. Please do not sign your name on Mr. Linky unless you are participating in One Single Impression.

Sunday Scribblings - Every Saturday (or thereabouts!) they post a writing prompt. You create a piece of writing inspired by that writing prompt. You post your writing on your blog, add your name and url in the Mr. Lynky tool and leave a comment on the corresponding prompt to let them know you have participated.

Poets United – The Poetry Pantry is a place for 2nd Chance Poems or 1st time shares. Anything goes, all poems, all poets, all week. If you have a poem you would like to share, something that you just felt inspired to write and want others to read. Perhaps it’s a poem that didn’t get as much exposure on your blog as you would have liked. Maybe it’s a poem that you wrote a long time ago that you would like people to revisit. That’s what this section of Poets United is for. Each Sunday they start a new post with a Mr. Linky. This is so that you can post a link to anything you want any and every one to read, anything at all related to poetry or prose found on your own poetry blogs. It will remain open all week so that you can share your writings and thoughts. What you choose to put there is up to you so don't be afraid to share with them!!

  3. Hey guys! I found what seems to be a fairly new/small site that offers weekly prompts, also.

It is called Thursday Tales: http://talesthursday.blogspot.com/

and the format seems to be much like Magpie Tales, with the prompt being a photograph. Enjoy! ;)
